Return to School 2020

August 24th Update from Dr. Aste, Principal

Dear MW Parents/Guardians,

I hope everyone had a good weekend. Our teachers are working hard to plan an exciting and engaging virtual opening. I want to provide you with some updates.

 Teachers and Classes

  • Your child’s classroom teacher will reach out to you via email to tell you about two opportunities to “meet” with the teacher. First, your child’s teacher will invite you to schedule a 10-minute meet and greet. This will provide an opportunity for our teachers to meet all of their students individually.
  • The teacher’s email will also have an invitation to our Virtual Orientation on September 3rd. At scheduled times throughout that day, your child will log on at their assigned time and join their class for a community builder activity led by their classroom teacher.
  • Both of these meetings will help prepare your child for a successful first day on September 8, 2020.

  • We are distributing over 400 laptop computers this week to those parents who requested them.

 Yearbooks and Supplies

  • For those families that requested to borrow laptops, we are distributing yearbooks and PTA school supply boxes (if you ordered them) at the same pick-up this week.
  • If you ordered a yearbook or PTA school supplies and did not request a laptop, we will schedule a time for you to pick up yearbooks and/or the supply boxes next week (August 31).

Return to School FAQs

  •  Our school website has a Return to School site with helpful information.

Return to School

  • FCPS also has an FAQ at this link.

Thank you for your support and patience. Please feel free to reach out with questions.

September 2nd Update from Dr. Aste, Principal

Dear MW Parents/Guardians,

We’re gearing up for a great start to our school year. We’ve loaned over 600 computers to students, and our teachers have been planning engaging and exciting ways to connect with your kids and embark on this virtual learning adventure together. I want to provide updates on several topics:

  1. Our Virtual Orientation for every class takes place tomorrow, Thursday, September 3rd at scheduled times throughout the day. This will be a great way for your child to virtually “meet” their classmates and get ready for the first day of school.
  2. Food Service – Beginning September 8th, our Grab and Go food service will expand hours from 8:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. every week day. All students can pick-up breakfast and lunch for no charge. Adults can also purchase meals for $2.00.
  3. Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Mosby Woods ES, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the FCPS-approved digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here:

This page provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Attached is an overview of what the form looks like. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

  1. Band and Strings

The Mosby Woods Band and Strings teachers are so happy to welcome you to our Mosby Woods instrumental music programs 2020-2021! This fall we will have LIVE Weekly Lessons! Our school is unique as we start instrumental music in 3rd grade with the 3rd   Grade Violin Program (almost all 3rd graders participate in this).  4th, 5th and 6th grade students are given the choice between continuing with the Strings program (violin, viola, cello, bass) or the Band program (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, etc., and percussion).

Sign up your child for band or strings. If you have questions, please email:  Mrs. Amoroso, Mosby Woods Band- @email  Ms. Lubinski, Mosby Woods Grade Strings- @email

Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. I hope you enjoy the Labor Day weekend.

September 8th Update from Dr. Aste, Principal

Dear MW Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I hope that your child’s first day of school was a good one. Even though it’s a different setting than we’ve had before, I hope your child was able to join their teacher and classmates on this exciting (and challenging) adventure of virtual learning. Our goal is to make the best of this difficult time and still make learning engaging and fun.

There are several information items for you to know.

Tech Support The FCPS Parent Technology Resource page provides tip sheets and support in multiple languages. For technical support questions about your online parent accounts, your student’s FCPS laptop, or technology your student uses for online learning, contact the Parent Technology Help Desk (toll free) at 833-921-3277 or enter a support request ticket via the  Parent and Student IT Portal.

The Parent Technology Help Desk will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.)

Parent Pick-Up of Materials

Teachers in grade levels K, 1st and 2nd have prepared packets with paper materials to help your child’s distance learning.  We had most of the pick-ups for K and 2 last week, and the 1st grade materials are now ready for pick-up. We also have planners (agenda notebooks) available for students in grades 3-6. If you choose to pick up materials from school, please look for the enclosed Emergency Care and Health forms, review, make corrections and return by 9/18. This can be done electronically or in the drop-off box at school.

Parents can drive through the Kiss & Ride lanes around to the front of the school to pick up materials on Thursday, September 10th at these times: 7:30-8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m., or 3:45-5:30 p.m. Please stay in your car and say your child’s last name and grade to the staff member that greets you.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

As the school year begins virtually, it is important to remember these forms are required for all students for SY 20-21 and are available for electronic submission by parents via their FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) accounts within the weCare@school (weCare) module.  If you wish, you may also submit the forms in person at the school.  Simply place your forms in the labeled box sitting outside the entrance of the school building.  An office assistant will check the box throughout the day to collect submitted forms.

Thank you for your constant patience and support. Together, we will make this a great school year for all of our students.

Please feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or kudos.

Technology Resources and Support

As the school year begins with virtual learning, FCPS has developed resources that can help with basic technology issues. FCPS’ YouTube channel has videos on basic technology topics that highlight some of the key FCPS tools, such as Google and Blackboard. These videos are designed to provide solutions for quick, simple questions.

Additionally, there are tip sheets available on the FCPS Parent Technology Resource page in multiple languages that provide answers to basic questions about FCPS technologies. These resources will continue to be updated throughout the year; we encourage you to check that page first.

If you can’t find answers in FCPS’ online resources, there are several places to seek help. Below is a guide to help you get information quickly:

  • For a child’s schedule or classes, school events, or programs, checking out an FCPS laptop, or updating your information, contact your child’s school directly.
  • Broader inquiries about FCPS programs or resources for families may be directed to the Parent Resource Center at 703-204-3941, or use one of our eight Parent Information Phone Lines for information in multiple languages.
  • Technical support questions about your online parent accounts, your student’s FCPS laptop, or your student’s online applications, contact the Parent Technology Help Desk (toll free) at 833-921-3277 or enter a support request ticket via the Parent and Student IT Portal.

Supporting Good Digital Citizenship

Student Password Assistance

  • If a student is new to FCPS or forgot her/his password, click the Student section of the Parent and Student IT Support Portal and put in the need to set the student's password.
  • If you know your child's password, parents are encouraged to visit the Account Manager website with their child. Here students, with the help of their parents, can set up account recovery information which will allow the student and parent to reset the student password themselves should it be forgotten or need to be changed.
  • FCPS is not requiring the student passwords be changed this year. Please disregard any emails your child may have received to their FCPS Gmail account saying their password will expire. If your child would like to change her/his password, please visit the Student password change website.
  • Things to know:
    • Password changes for some programs take overnight to take effect.
    • Do not change a student's FCPS Google password via Google. Use one of the previous  ways to change the student's password. (This will change the password for all FCPS programs, too.)
    • If your child has an FCPS laptop, they will need to log into the laptop outside an FCPS school for the new password to sync with the laptop.

Programs and Logins

Students have access to several FCPS approved learning programs and websites.

  • Your child’s FCPS login is her/his studentID and her/his FCPSpassword
  • Your child’s Google login, for Google apps or other programs that use the Google login, is your child’s email address and her/his FCPSpassword.

How to clear your cache in Google Chrome

Sometimes websites stop loading correctly. One thing to try is clearing the cache in the Internet browser. Here is how to clear your cache in Google Chrome:

Watch the video showing how to clear your cache or follow the directions below:

1. Delete the browser cache with a shortcut.

The fastest way to get rid of the cache data in Google Chrome is the option "Clear Browser cache". You can access this function with the following shortcut:

  • Press the keys [Ctrl], [Shift] and [Del]. Be sure you press all the keys at once.
  • A new window opens: "Clear Browser cache".
  • Here you can select in the upper dropdown-menu, for which time period you want to delete the cache data. You can select between "last hour", "last day", "last week", "last four weeks" or "all".
  • If you want to delete all cache date, select "all".
  • Check the box in front of "Images and Files in Cache".
  • Submit your selection by clicking the "Delete Browser data" Button.
  • Reload your site.

2. Clear browser cache manually

If you don't want to use the keyboard shortcut to call the function "Clear Browser data" you can access it manually:

  • Click on the "Menu" in the upper right corner of Google Chrome and Open the Browser setting. You can recognise the menu by the three stacked dots.
  • Next, you select the option "more tools".
  • In the next step click on "Delete Browser data".
  • Now you can follow the steps from the description above and select the specific time period (Step 3).
