What a  year!

What a challenging and unforgettable school year this has been! While many of us experienced sadness and disappointment about missing exciting learning, our teachers and friends, there was still so much to celebrate. We learned to appreciate the opportunities to listen and learn through distance learning. We learned to use some new technology tools and how to communicate with each other in different ways.  We learned that our children and teachers are so resilient, flexible, innovative and strong. We also celebrated that our diverse Mosby Woods community is a family where respect, love and unity are the values we uphold. This time away from seeing our kids and being able to give a hug or high five has strengthened our commitment to bring the joy when we are all back in the school building.   We are grateful for your words of kindness and appreciation for all of our staff. We are grateful for your patience, flexibility and support in partnering with us to teach your kids. Our hope is that our Mosby Woods family returns together in an even stronger more cohesive way where we continue to inspire our Mustangs to Learn, Give and Thrive. I hope you have a restful summer and continue to stay safe, healthy and connected.

Congratulations to all of our Mustangs!

Supply lists have been updated for the upcoming school year. Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, third grader Dalton Avery earned a perfect score of 20 on the recent challenge. Nationally, only 32 third graders achieved this result. Other students from Mosby Woods Elementary who achieved outstanding results in the meet include third graders Rohan Dash and Elsa Edin, fourth graders Isis Nzekwe and Angelina O, fifth grader Clara Yin and sixth grader Diya Paudyal.

Sixth grader Catherine Williamson also earned Individual Highest Honors in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 56 out of a possible 60 points. Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by their classroom teacher.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight.

We are so happy to be reconnected with synchronous distance learning this week! Our teachers loved seeing the smiling faces of all of our Mustangs. Thank you so much for your patience and flexibility. We’re hopeful for a smooth ride with our new normal. More exciting learning opportunities to come!

Dr. Aste

Teachers are so excited that Virtual Learning is working. They have missed their students!

Mosby Woods Distance Learning

Students participate in face-to-face instruction Monday - Thursday following the Mosby Woods Virtual Schedule. This schedule is located on the Mosby Woods Distance Learning FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) course. Information on how students access their class's Blackboard Collaborate Ultra (BBCU) link can also be found there.

Visit the Mosby Woods website for more information on our Distance Learning Plan, as well as answers to Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting Tips for parents and students.

Staff Appreciation Week: May 4th to May 8th

From the Mosby Woods PTA:

The nation celebrates teacher appreciation the first week of every May. Although school has been closed, the Mosby Woods staff have continued to work hard to connect with families, undergo training and meetings, and establish online learning while managing their own personal situations. Please help us celebrate our wonderful Mosby Woods Elementary School Staff next week.

MONDAY, May 4th: Students write a “Thank You” email note to your teachers or send an e-card! Bonus: Parents - write one too! Free teacher appreciation cards can be found online at Hallmark and Greetings Island

TUESDAY, May 5th: National Teacher Appreciation Day! Students upload a picture of their artwork (i.e., painting, drawing, poem) saying “Thank you” or take a picture of their sidewalk chalk art and email it to their teachers. Consider saying “thank you” in a different language!

WEDNESDAY, May 6th: Create a video message and email it to your teacher. Not sure of what to say? Some ideas:

I love being in your class because…

My favorite memory this year was…

You taught me. . .

You always say. . .

Thank you for. . .

THURSDAY, May 7th: Show your support for our teachers and school by wearing your Mosby Woods spirit wear or school colors during your live online interaction with your teachers.

FRIDAY, May 8th: Thanks to the donations from families earlier in the year, teachers will receive an Amazon Gift Card from the PTA. If you would like add to the generosity, consider the option of sending your teacher your own e-gift card (i.e., to a local shop or restaurant, Netflix/Hulu, grocery stores, grocery/restaurant store delivery, etc.)

Student Password Support

Before your child forgets their password or needs to change it, we encourage all parents to visit the Account Manager website with them.

Here students, with the help of their parents, can set up account recovery information which will allow the student and parent to reset the student password themselves should it be forgotten or if it needs to be changed.

Students Create Blog for Students

Troop 6310 is pleased to announce the launching of their weekly blog.

Our girls had planned to host a book drive and an event at the local library for their Bronze Award in the spring. However, because of the current situation, we had to cancel the activities. Despite this, our girls were inspired to carry on with plans to make a difference in their community. They wanted to create a meaningful way to share their ideas on coping with the stay-at-home order and to provide inspiration to others during this coronavirus period. So they created a blog to share with their fellow scouts.

In their blog, our troop members offer their personal suggestions on movies and books with themes of empowerment for girls; share their original photographs, drawings, and poetry to entertain and encourage others; create games, puzzles, and jokes to spread fun and laughter; and highlight notable women who inspire them.

We will continue to add more information and ideas to the blog regularly so we hope you enjoy our blog — please share, comment and subscribe!

Another Successful Yard Sale!

Thank you to all who donated items that helped raise $1147 for our school.

BIG thanks to the volunteers who showed up to unload donations and then load up the truck.

What a great success thanks to everyone involved!
